What Is
Dry Skin?
Dry skin occurs when water and natural
oils are lost from the top layers. Oil acts as a barrier to prevent the skin
losing water, therefore one needs both oil and water to prevent dry skin.
Dry skin conditions can be inherited; dry skin could be due to environmental
factors like sun exposure or cold, dry air. Dry skin condition intensifies
as you get older.
Dry skin is felt as tight and flaky. Pores aren’t visible with dry skin. Dry
skin looks dull. Dry itchy skin also feels rough. Dry skin makes you feel as
if you are wearing a mask.
Dry skin is also known as xerosis. If the natural oil coating, produced by
the skin oil glands, is removed then dry skin is the result that can lead to
cracking and then in turn to inflammation. Xerosis is usually a long-term
problem that recurs often, especially in the winter. Long hot baths, harsh
soaps and cold winter weather worsens dry skin problems.
Dry skin treatment is intended to
restore the natural oil to your skin:
-
Dry skin treatment involves keeping
the skin lubricated. Do not take more than one shower a day and use
lukewarm water as hot water causes more dry skin.
-
When toweling dry don't rub the dry
skin, rather blot the skin so there is still some water left on the skin.
-
Dry skin is irritated by soap, use
soap that contains a moisturizer. Dry skin responds well to Cetaphil soap,
Oil of Olay, Dove or Basis.
-
If you like to swim during the winter
months, rinse off the chlorine with cool to warm water so that the dry
skin is well treated.
-
Use an emollient liberally on dry
skin. Apply it thick especially on dry itchy skin.
-
Dry skin is usually a long term
problem that recurs often, especially in winter. If the itchy dry skin
returns, use the lubricating routine regularly.

Dry Skin
Care:
People suffer from weather-related dry
skin in the winter. The skin loses its natural moisture barrier and the top
layer dries out and flakes off. Regular use of moisturizer usually clears it
up. Dry skin care usually brings the dry skin condition under control in
under two weeks.
• Dry skin care requires regular use of
a gentle, creamy cleanser
• Your regular dry skin care involves
rinsing with cool water
• Use a thick moisturizer for your dry
skin care, apply it while the skin is damp to lock in the moisture.
• Avoid products containing drying
agents like alcohol, clay and glycerin in your dry skin care.
• A dry skin remedy for extreme cases
may also require a mild chemical peel at a dermatologist's office. This form
of dry skin remedy removes layers of dead skin that block moisturizer from
reaching the healthy skin beneath.
Eczema is a more severe, though common, dry skin condition requiring
daily dry skin care routine. It is generally hereditary and occurs
year-round. This dry skin condition can be caused by irritants like wool
fabrics or allergic reactions to anything from skincare products to laundry
detergent. Dry itchy skin results that can scab and flake off. The dry skin
remedy that’s needed is mild soap use. Another regular dry skin care is the
application of moisturizer that will not exacerbate this dry skin condition.
This dry skin remedy could need doctor prescribed anti-dry skin medication.
Diabetics have a problem with dry
skin:
If you live with diabetes, you may be
concerned about the problem of dry skin on your feet or other dry areas.
It’s important to watch those problems carefully because with diabetics,
cracked skin could lead to bacterial infection and that could result in
serious dry skin complications. It is very important to follow a regular dry
skin treatment regimen against continuing dry skin problems. Dry skin care
and moisturizing creams are very necessary to maintain a lubricated skin.
Ointments are dry skin treatments that are mixtures of water in oil,
usually either lanolin or petrolatum.
Creams are another form of dry skin treatment that is a preparation
of oil in water and this dry skin treatment must be applied often to be
effective.
Lotions, yet another dry skin treatment contains powder crystals
dissolved in water. Although these dry skin treatments are easy to apply and
may be more pleasing than ointments and creams; this water-based lotion dry
skin treatment does not have the same protective qualities.
The thick moisturizing dry skin treatment should be used indefinitely to
prevent recurrence of dry skin.
Humidifiers are another dry skin treatment to relieve your dry skin
condition, which adds moisture to the air.
Bathing less often and using milder soaps is another dry skin
treatment that can help relieve dry skin. Warm water as a dry skin treatment
is less irritating to dry skin than hot water.

Dry itchy skin is easily irritated. Dry itchy skin can affect your

kidney disease. A common dry skin treatment is the use of moisturizers such
as ointments, creams, and lotions that reduce water loss and soothe the dry
skin.
Dry skin is common in later life. The loss of sweat and oil glands as we age
may also worsen dry skin. Overuse of soaps, antiperspirants, perfumes, or
hot baths will also exacerbate the dry skin problem.
With menopause, declining estrogen levels contribute to excessive dry skin
or sometimes very oily skin. Blood pressure medications and diuretics may
also cause dry skin. Healthcare professionals advise women with very dry
skin against using soap and alcohol-based astringents (toners), which
typically result in dry skin.
